2019 Toyota Sequoia Full Size SUV Review

TOYOTA SEQUOIA AT TOYOTA OF BROOKFIELD

Standing tall in the full-sized SUV segment, the new 2019 Toyota Sequoia, like the redwoods that inspired its name is about as big as they come. With a spacious cabin, powerful engine, a capable chassis and versatile cargo options, the Sequoia is about as good as it gets. Whether loaded with passengers, sporting gear, or perhaps a boat heading for the beach house, or just running down to the local convenience store, the new Toyota Sequoia is ready, whenever you are.

IT'S A GOOD LOOK.

Utilizing body on frame construction, the Sequoia starts with a comfortable foundation for off-roading and other off-pavement driving and towing. The Sequoia's four-wheel independent suspension yields a cushy ride while cruising on normal streets and road surfaces.

The Sequoia Platinum grade steps into luxury territory with its load-leveling suspension and adaptive variable suspension with electronic damper controls that offer a choice of Comfort, Normal and Sport settings. The rear air spring suspension helps the Sequoia settle at the proper drive height when carrying heavier than normal loads.

These new full-size Toyota SUV are available in four trim levels ranging from SR5, TRD Sport, Limited and Platinum grade vehicles.

POWERFULLY SOPHISTICATICATED.

Using all the strength it can muster, the Sequoia's 5.7-liter i-FORCE V8 engine produces 381 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and a stump-pulling 401 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm, for nearly unstoppable power that is stout enough to tow up to 7,400 pounds. Utilizing dual independent variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) and an acoustic Control Induction System for ample torque across its power band, this engine only requires regular gas, and operates with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

The available multi-mode 4WD system is a super versatile example of one of the best on any large SUV in the business. Equipped with a lockable TORSEN limited-slip center differential, it sends torque to both the front and rear wheels, as needed, while a two-speed transfer case provides a low range for let's just call it, "hill climbing."

The Toyota Sequoia's standard tow hitch is integrated into the frame as a single unit for added strength. The Tow/Haul mode modifies shift points for optimal towing performance while standard Trailer Sway Control uses the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to counteract the effects of trailer sway. For added convenience, there is a standard rearview camera that helps line up a trailer hitch for towing your boat or other toy.

MOVING ON UP

…to the bigtime. Well, it's not a deluxe apartment in the sky but it is big. With a comfortable interior featuring cushy chairs in the front and seating for up to eight, the new Toyota Sequoia is made to easily swallow everything you can toss its way. Wide opening rear doors ease passenger entry and exit along with child seat installation.

The versatile 40/20/40 split second row of seats can handle three passengers and slides fore and aft for a total of 5.9-inches. And cupholders? The Sequoia has em. Sixteen to be exact, unless you opt for the Platinum grade which has two additional for a total of 18.
