New 2019 Toyota 4Runner 4WD SUV Review

A five- or seven-passenger Toyota Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), the Toyota 4Runner at Toyota of Brookfield, Wisconsin, has been at the forefront of sport utility vehicles for 35 years, even becoming cult classics to adventurers and outdoorspeople, alike.  It's the perfect vehicle to help establish a base camp area but it really is so much more. It's the perfect vehicle to drop the kids at school, take the pet to the vet, and bring home the mulch from the garden center or all of the above.

The 2019 Toyota 4Runner comes in several flavors including 2WD, part-time 4WD with two-speed transfer case, or in the case of the top of the line Limited model, full-time multi-mode 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case and locking center differential. Four-wheel-drive (FWD) models are complete with a full 9.6-inches of ground clearance.

The new 4Runner continues to refine and improve its abilities (and in the process, its legend) by adding more capabilities via the addition of an all-new suspension package that includes 2.5-inch Fox Internal Bypass Shocks for impressive performance whether on or off-road.

Power for the Toyota 4Runner at Toyota of Brookfield, comes from a 4.0-liter 6-cylinder, 24-valve aluminum alloy block with aluminum alloy heads. Making 270-horsepower @ 5,600 rpm and 278 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm, it utilizes a direct-injection fuel delivery system for added fuel economy and efficiency along with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i). This award-winning six-cylinder engine is mated with a 5-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission. This powertrain delivers peak performance to either a rear (2WD), part-time 4x4 or full-time 4x4 system, all of which possess the ability to take you from on-road to off-road and back, over and over again. For added capabilities, the 4x4 SR5, and TRD Off-Road 4Runner vehicles are also equipped with a Toyota High/Low transfer case.

The entire Toyota 4Runner powertrain is bolted to a body-on-frame chassis that is tough as nails and includes a 4-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension. Two-wheel-drive models are complete with a standard Automatic Limited Slip Differential (AUTO DSL). The part-time 4x4 system uses Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) with a two-speed transfer case to maintain traction when it senses wheel slippage. Finally, the full-time 4WD system is equipped with a Torsen center differential. With this system, the center differential will vary from the standard 40:60 torque split that varies up to 30:70 when the system senses additional wheel slippage.

Finally, buyers can take advantage of Standard Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) which holds the vehicle stationary for approximately 5-seconds while the driver moves their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Also standard, the Downhill Assist Control (DAC) that helps maintain a constant slow speed while descending a hill, allowing the driver to concentrate primarily on steering. If they want to go even further, they can take advantage of Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select System that allows you to tailor the 4Runner's abilities according to the terrain you are encountering at any time.
