2019 Toyota 86 Sports Coupe Review | Toyota of Brookfield

What is the New Toyota 86?

The Toyota 86 is a 2+2 rear-wheel drive Sports Coupe that follows the basic tenets that make up the ultimate sports car. There's the optimal power to weight ratio, a great design, perfect balance and superior road feel that talks to the driver letting them know what the car is doing at any one moment.

But in addition to its communicative side, it looks the part too. With an available TRD body kit, including front bumper, side sills, rear bumper, rear diffuser and spoiler, buyers can modify their 86 to their liking in no time. Just take a regular TRD and muscle it up a bit so it looks ready for the racetrack as well, and in fact, it will be. Whether it's the standard, but highly optioned 86 or even the 86 TRD Special Edition, this 86 is a vehicle that can be modified to the moon and back.

Under the skin is another place the 2019 Toyota 86 sports coupe shines. In the case of the Toyota 86 TRD Special Edition, with its SACHS specialty dampers, front and rear Brembo brakes and 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 Summer tires.

Toyota 86 Interior

Inside, the Toyota 86 offers all the essentials: The instrument cluster includes a TFT Multi-Information-Display with vehicle data screens, G-force meters, and a stopwatch, as well as horsepower and torque curves. A large, center-mounted tachometer integrates a digital speedometer and a programmable rev indicator. An analog speedometer flanks on the left, while fuel level and temperature gauges that are positioned to the tachometer's right side. And in case you tire from the performance note of the engine, you can always turn on the eight-speaker Pioneer audio system and its HD Radio, and iPod connectivity.

With the red and black trimmed telescoping steering wheel with red contrast stitching, red and black sport bucket seats with wide side bolsters, Granlux suede-like covering atop the instrument cluster, and TRD logos throughout, it's clear the 86 means business…in a playful sort of way. The 2+2 seating will find a tight fit in the second row but there is a plan B: Just fold the seats forward and you have a large trunk area.

Toyota 86 Engine Performance

The 2.0-liter, horizontally-opposed aluminum Boxer engine is designed to deliver 205 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 156 lb-ft of torque at 6,400 rpm when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission. Add the six-speed automatic which will result in a slight reduction of five horsepower and five lb-ft of torque. With dual variable valve timing it is able to achieve a broader torque curve which makes the Toyota 86 a suitable candidate as a daily driver. The Toyota 86's 2.0-liter four-cylinder is a high-revving engine cable of extracting 100 horsepower per liter, thanks to its D-4S Dual injection system that combines direct and port injection. The end result is a sports car that is agile on both the road and the racetrack. And with an EPA-estimated 24 mpg city / 32 mpg highway when equipped with the six-speed automatic and 21 mpg city / 28 mpg highway with the six-speed manual, you'll have a sports car that is efficient and good looking at the same time.
